A man in the military has an undeniable allure. Besides the sexy uniforms and physical stamina, men on active duty can be the perfect counterpart to the traveling woman. Living abroad is a dream for many women, and dating a man in service who happens to be stationed in a foreign country is one way to achieve that dream. Post-Memorial Day joy goes deeper than the average zeal of the three day weekend.

Sometimes you read something so insanely stupid that you feel violated — perhaps lobotmized — after having read it. In a slide presentation recently foisted upon all personnel in 19th Air Force, the chief lawyer of Air Education and Training Command AETC unintentionally crystallizes the distinction between good intentions and true leadership. The slides, meant to communicate the relevant meat of AFI and an AETC Guidance Memorandum supporting it, is like a step-by-step cookbook for how to destroy unit morale and cohesion. First it divides people into bureaucratic bins, giving each human a label. Then, it declares that the bins are never to touch one another. All the while, it pretends this is a perfect recipe for professionalism, demonstrating zero understanding of the definition of the word. The stated purpose of this joke is to define and police unprofessional relationships.
Like all military personnel, Air Force members rely on their loved ones for emotional support and a connection to home. While dating a civilian is generally allowed, specific policies apply to airmen who want to date fellow service members. These rules are in place because rank is critical to military service. Dating or other highly familiar relationships between a supervisor and a subordinate could erode morale, damage unit cohesion and place the dating partners as well as their unit in dangerous or difficult situations. Those who are responsible for the recruitment or education of airmen are not permitted to date or form social relationships with those for whom they are responsible.
Being in a military relationship can, at times, be difficult. Being in a relationship with a service member is going to involve a lot of different social activities, from unit picnics to formal military balls. For family oriented events, like unit family picnics and family fun days, dressing modestly is the most appropriate approach. For male spouses, avoid too tight or too short shorts, low rider pants and similar types of clothing.
